Troll formulas

Troll formulas are spoken spells. Galdr, rune magic, and runa, runes or spell casting, come from the same origins as chanting spell formulas. The term galdralag refers to a style of poetic verse associated in the Eddas with magic. The identification of galdr as rune magic comes from the Galdrabok, an Icelandic grimoire dating to the 1600s. The inclusion of Christianized formulas grants us a fascinating glimpse into how older charms were transmuted into a post-pagan world.

Trolldom is one of a very few historical magical practices that not only encourages new practitioners to write their own spells, but practically requires it. In this tradition, once a mentor teaches a student a formula it no longer works for the teacher. Consequently there are hundreds of written formulas as well as various methods for constructing new formulas.
